McMenamins Elks Temple 'Walter Sutter' Painting

I was an artist working with the west coast McMenamins group for the renovation of the historic Tacoma Elks Temple. The multi-level building is filled with original artwork celebrating the local history and culture of Tacoma.

This painting is an based on the eccentric figure of Walter Sutter. In a time when many people rarely strayed beyond their home state, Mr. Sutter was an eccentric world traveler and passionate collector. As a young teenager, he traveled to China in 1901. Years later and full of stories, he eventually returned to Tacoma and designed an usual new house to contain his prolific collection of Chinese art and dolls, Artifacts from Asia, and a broad collection of fluorescent minerals. His unique home and “Peace Garden” were noted in a WPA guide to Tacoma as “The Chinese Museum” and was open to visitors for many years. Here we see Mr. Sutter showing off his glowing rock collection to a visiting nurse from nearby Ft. Lewis, where he would often amused injured troops with his minerals. The crystals glow under black light. The figures are flanked on either side by censers (a form of incense burners) that are based off of the mythical 'qilins' often seen in Chinese artwork from the 17th and 19th century. This period of artwork would be consistent with the age of the artifacts he might have collected.

McMenamins 'Elks Temple' Ballroom Murals

I was an artist working with the west coast McMenamins group for the renovation of the historic Tacoma Elks Temple. The grand ballroom of the multi-level building has a number of murals based on a Tacoma interpretation of Wagner’s ‘The Ring’ opera.

This mural, adapted from a scene from Wagner's 'The Ring' opera, shows the Valkyry Brunhilde entering Valhalla for eternal rest. She has gone against the wishes of her father, and is condemned to become mortal and stay forever on the mountain. and as she takes rest, she is encircled by protective fire.

However, in this mural adaptation, Brunhilde is portrayed as Fay Fuller, the first woman to summit Mt. Rainier in 1890. Having moved form the east coast as a child, she made it her goal at 17 to someday reach Rainier's peak. She became a schoolteacher and journalist in yelm until she decided to buck traditions and set off toward the summit. She wore practical and appropriate (for the time,) hiking clothes, which were seen as immodest for a woman. They slept in steaming vents and ice caves on the summit, and came down the next day. After her climb she helped found the Washington Alpine club, as well as the Mazamas climbing club.

Here she is resting on a rock, encircled by flaming Scarlet Paintbrush, a common alpine meadow flower on Rainier. We see the rock cairns she's built, which are a common sight in hiking and are used to help others find the path. On each one is a shining hair pin, which she left a trail of as she hiked to the summit (according to one very apocryphal story.) Behind her is the warm glow of the Camp Muir hut, used by climbers to summit, and how her Valhalla home.

This mural, adapted from the opening scene from Wagner's 'The Ring' opera, shows the three mischievous and flirtatious Rhine-maidens toying with the dwarf Albrich. However, he eventually manages to spitefully steal their Rhine-gold.

In this mural adaptation, Albrich is the Elks' cook, who has wandered down the block to the Rialto to see a bawdy stage and film performance by the touring Zigfield Girls. These pipe-smoking, fur wearing women in the 20's would beckon men into come see their 'bathing beauties' dance and 3D film show. This story assumes that the after-party at the Rialto continued on, eventually sloshing down into the pool of the Elks Temple. Here the prohibition-era bathtub-booze was smuggled in by the dancers, and then stolen by the cook.

McMenamins Elks Temple 'Dune' Painting

I was an artist working with the west coast McMenamins group for the renovation of the historic Tacoma Elks Temple. The multi-level building is filled with original artwork celebrating the local history and culture of Tacoma.

This painting is an illustration of Frank Herbert's Pacific Northwest inspiration for the epic Dune book series, rather than an illustration of the book's narrative. Dune is part of the sci-fi literature cannon, and here we see the various Tacoma influences literally transformed through his writing process into the rich sci-fi universe of Dune. The vast shipping, logging, rail, and maritime industries that built the economic and political power of Tacoma and the larger Puget Sound are seen here as the inspiration for the geopolitical maneuvering that makes up the main plot of the Dune series.
